Today’s Reading
Romans 13

Scripture Focus

“Owe nothing to anyone—except for your obligation to love one another. If you love your neighbor, you will fulfill the requirements of God’s law.

…remove your dark deeds like dirty clothes, and put on the shining armor of right living.”
— Romans 13:8, 12 (NLT)

Reflection

Romans 13 is a continuation of Romans 12. Paul is still describing what a transformed life looks like.

In Romans 12, believers are called to be living sacrifices, to renew their minds, to love sincerely, to bless those who persecute them, and to overcome evil with good. Romans 13 builds on that foundation by explaining how transformed believers should live within society.

Paul teaches that God has established authorities to maintain order and restrain evil. Writing to Christians living under Roman rule, he encourages them to be known for holiness, peace, respect, and love rather than rebellion and disorder. This does not mean we obey authorities when they command us to sin. Throughout Scripture, men like Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, along with Peter and John, chose obedience to God above obedience to man. The principle is simple: obey earthly authorities whenever possible, but obey God above all else.

Paul then reminds believers of a debt that never ends—the debt of love. We may pay our bills and fulfill our responsibilities, but we will never reach a point where we have loved enough. Love remains the ongoing obligation of every follower of Christ.

The chapter closes with a powerful challenge: remove the dark deeds of the flesh and put on the shining armor of right living. We are to lay aside sinful attitudes and behaviors and clothe ourselves with the character of Jesus. This is more than changing our behavior; it is allowing Christ to be seen through the way we live.

Romans 12 and 13 together paint a beautiful picture of a Spirit-transformed believer—one who loves others, respects authority, fulfills responsibilities, and puts on Christ each day.

Lesson for Me

Today the Lord reminded me that transformation is not just about what I believe but how I live. If I belong to Christ, His character should be visible in my words, attitudes, and actions.

Love is a debt I will never fully repay. Each day is another opportunity to love God and love others well.

The Lord also challenged me to remove any attitudes or habits that do not reflect Him and to put on Christ daily. As I trust His sovereignty, I can walk in peace, fulfill my responsibilities, respect authority, and live as a citizen of heaven while serving Him on earth.

Looking Into My Heart

* Is my life marked by genuine love for others?
* Are there attitudes or behaviors I need to take off and surrender to Christ?
* Am I reflecting Jesus in my words, actions, and responses?
* What does putting on Christ look like in my life today?

Prayer 🙏

Holy Spirit,

Thank You for Your patient work of transformation in my life. Search my heart and reveal anything that does not reflect the character of Christ. Help me remove the dark deeds, sinful attitudes, and selfish desires that hinder my walk with You.

Teach me to walk in genuine love. Help me love when it is difficult, forgive when I have been hurt, and serve others with humility. Remind me that love is a debt I will always owe and that loving others is one of the clearest ways I reflect Jesus to the world.

Give me wisdom to respect authority, courage to obey You above all else, and discernment to know the difference. Guard my heart from bitterness, anger, and rebellion. Help me live as a citizen of heaven while faithfully serving You on earth.

Today I choose to put on the Lord Jesus Christ. Let my words, actions, attitudes, and decisions reflect Him. Continue transforming me into the woman You created me to be, bringing glory to Your name in every area of my life.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen. 🙏

or

“Dear daughter…”
