Today’s Reading -Romans 14
Scripture Focus
“For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of what we eat or drink, but of living a life of goodness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.”
— Romans 14:17 (NLT)
Observation
Romans 14 teaches believers how to live together when they have different convictions about non-essential matters. Some Christians in Paul's day felt freedom to eat certain foods, while others did not. Some honored specific days, while others viewed all days alike. Rather than arguing over these differences, Paul calls believers to accept one another, stop judging one another, and pursue peace.
Paul reminds us that each believer belongs to the Lord and will one day give a personal account to Him. Therefore, our focus should not be on criticizing fellow believers but on honoring Christ and helping others grow in their faith.
At the center of the chapter is a powerful reminder that God's kingdom is not about outward rules and personal preferences but about righteousness, peace, and joy produced by the Holy Spirit.
Reflection
How much time and energy do we spend focused on things that are not the main thing?
Paul was not teaching that truth does not matter. Throughout his letters, he fiercely defended sound doctrine and the Gospel. What he is teaching here is that not every disagreement deserves a battle. Some matters are clearly addressed in Scripture and must be upheld. Other matters involve personal convictions where sincere believers may come to different conclusions.
The enemy loves to distract believers with arguments that create division. He knows that when our attention is consumed by winning debates, we often lose sight of loving people.
Paul redirects our focus back to what truly matters: honoring Jesus, walking in love, pursuing peace, and building one another up in the faith.
As I read this chapter, I am reminded that my goal is not to prove that I am right about every issue. My goal is to reflect Christ. I want my words, attitudes, and actions to encourage others to draw closer to Him. One day I will stand before the Lord, not to give an account of everyone else's choices, but of my own heart and obedience.
The question is not, "Can I win this argument?" The question is, "Does this honor Jesus and build up His people?"
Lesson for Me
-Stand firm on the clear truths of God's Word.
-Walk humbly in areas of personal conviction.
-Refuse to judge fellow believers over non-essential matters.
-Pursue peace, unity, and spiritual growth.
-Remember that my ultimate responsibility is to honor the Lord in all I do.
Applying This to My Heart and My Life
-Am I spending more time correcting others than encouraging them?
-Is there someone I need to show more grace and understanding toward?
-Am I focused on building up the body of Christ or proving my point?
-Are my conversations producing peace, joy, and righteousness?
-In my daily choices, am I seeking to honor the Lord above all else?
Prayer 🙏
Father, thank You for reminding me that Your Kingdom is about righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. Help me to stand firmly on Your truth while walking in love toward others. Guard my heart from pride, judgment, and unnecessary arguments. Teach me to build others up rather than tear them down. Help me to honor You in my words, attitudes, and actions. May my life point people to Jesus and bring glory to Your name. In Jesus' name, Amen.
