May 27th Devotional - “Crowned by Wisdom”
Reading
Proverbs 4, 5, 6 & Romans 8
Scripture Focus
“My father taught me, ‘Take my words to heart. Follow my commands, and you will live. Get wisdom; develop good judgment. Don’t forget my words or turn away from them. Don’t turn your back on wisdom, for she will protect you. Love her, and she will guard you. Getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do! And whatever else you do, develop good judgment. If you prize wisdom, she will make you great. Embrace her, and she will honor you. She will place a lovely wreath on your head; she will present you with a beautiful crown.’”
— Proverbs 4:4–9 (NLT)
“My son, pay attention to my wisdom; listen carefully to my wise counsel.”
— Proverbs 5:1 (NLT)
Observation
These chapters of Proverbs are a heartfelt appeal from a father to his child to listen, remember, and live wisely. Solomon speaks not only from divine wisdom given to him, but also from lessons learned through the example of his own father, David. Wisdom is not just knowledge—it’s practical, lived-out truth that guards, guides, and blesses.
Devotional Thought
I didn’t know what wisdom really was until I came to know the Lord. Growing up, I didn’t understand that the lessons my mom tried to teach me—hard-earned truths, quiet warnings, loving advice—were actually wisdom. Now I see them differently.
Solomon received wisdom as a divine gift, but he also learned from David, a man after God's own heart. And we, too, are invited to receive and walk in this wisdom from above. Proverbs is like a treasure chest—full of instructions, warnings, promises, and examples. It’s meant to be read over and over again, not just skimmed once.
In my early years walking with Jesus, I remember trying to memorize a few verses from every chapter of Proverbs. That desire came from seeing how real and applicable God’s Word was to life. As I grew in the Lord, Proverbs helped shape my thoughts, my choices, and even how I parent and love others today.
Lesson for Me
- I am invited to prize wisdom—not just to admire it, but to pursue it daily.
- The wisdom passed down from God, through others, and through Scripture is a gift meant to be applied.
- I must choose to listen, to heed, and to guard God’s truth in my heart.
Application Questions
1. Who has passed down wisdom in your life? Have you treasured it or ignored it?
2. What area of your life right now needs wisdom—relationships, parenting, finances, decisions?
3. Are you making time to read, reflect on, and apply God’s wisdom from His Word?
Prayer
Lord, thank You for being the source of true wisdom. Thank You for the parents, mentors, and friends who have spoken truth into my life—even when I didn’t recognize it as wisdom at the time. Help me to treasure Your Word, to pursue understanding, and to walk in Your ways. Let wisdom guide my steps, guard my heart, and influence how I lead and love others. May my life be a testimony of the beauty and value of living wisely—for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, amen.
