January 11 Devotional

Today’s Reading
Genesis 27–28 • Psalm 4 • Luke 11

Scripture Focus (Old Testament)

“Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.”
Genesis 28:16 (NIV)

Old Testament Reflection – God Meets Us Where We Are
Jacob’s story in Genesis 27–28 is not a picture of moral strength—it’s a picture of grace. After deception, conflict, and running from consequences, Jacob lays his head on a stone in the wilderness. That is where God meets him. Not in a temple. Not after Jacob “fixes” himself. But in weakness, uncertainty, and fear.

Genesis 28 reminds us of something deeply important for spiritual growth: God is faithful even when we are flawed. The Lord confirms His covenant promises to Jacob—not because Jacob deserved them, but because God is faithful to keep His Word. Jacob discovers that God’s presence is not limited to holy places or perfect seasons. God meets him on the run.

Psalm 4 echoes this truth:

“When I call out to you, you answer me. You give me relief from my distress.” (Psalm 4:1)

God is near. Even when we are unaware. Even when we are weary.

Scripture Focus (New Testament)

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”
Luke 11:9 (NIV)

New Testament Reflection – Growing Through Dependence
In Luke 11, Jesus teaches His disciples how to pray—not as a ritual, but as a relationship. Prayer is not about perfect words; it’s about persistent dependence. Jesus invites us to ask, seek, and knock, trusting the Father’s heart.

This connects beautifully with Jacob’s story. Jacob did not yet know how to walk rightly—but God still spoke to him. Jesus now invites us to grow beyond merely receiving promises into actively trusting the Father through prayer. Spiritual growth deepens when we stop striving and start depending.

God is not distant. He is a Father who listens, provides, and gives what is good—even when we don’t fully understand His ways yet.

Lesson for Me

God is not waiting for me to be perfect before He meets me. He invites me to grow by trusting His presence, resting in His faithfulness, and depending on Him daily through prayer.

Application Questions
1.Where might God be present in my life right now that I have not been recognizing?
2.Am I running in fear—or resting in God’s promises?
3.How can I grow in consistent, trusting prayer instead of self-reliance?

Prayer 🙏

Father, thank You for meeting me where I am. Help me recognize Your presence even in uncertain seasons. Teach me to grow through prayer, trust Your heart, and rest in Your promises. Draw me closer to You as I learn to depend on You more each day. Amen.
