Reflection
These chapters show us something powerful:
God does not just work for His people—He reveals who He is to them.
In Exodus 17–20, God meets Israel in the wilderness—not because they are faithful, but because He is. They complain. They doubt. They fear. Yet God still provides, still protects, still speaks, still leads.
And every time He moves, He is revealing His name—His character.
At Rephidim, when Israel is weak and under attack, Moses lifts his staff and God gives victory. Moses builds an altar and calls it:
Jehovah-Nissi — The LORD My Banner
(Exodus 17:15)
God is their covering. Their victory. Their defender.
Then God provides water from the rock:
Jehovah-Rapha — The LORD Who Heals
(Exodus 15:26, revealed again in Exodus 17)
At Mount Sinai, before giving the commandments, God reminds them:
“I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of slavery.”
Before God gives them instruction, He reminds them of their redemption.
He is not a harsh master. He is a rescuing Father.
This is Jehovah — the covenant-keeping God.
The One who keeps His promises even when His people struggle to trust Him.
God does not lead His children just to rule them — He leads them to know Him.
⸻
Lesson for Me
God reveals His name so I can trust His heart.
When I feel weak — He is my banner.
When I feel wounded — He is my healer.
When I feel lost — He is my faithful guide.
I do not serve a distant God.
I belong to a faithful, personal, powerful Father.
⸻
Application Questions
•Which name of God do I need to cling to right now?
•Where have I been focusing more on my circumstances than on who God is?
•Do I trust God’s character even when I do not understand His timing?
•How can I remind myself daily of what God has already done for me?
⸻
Prayer
Lord, thank You for revealing Yourself to me.
Thank You for showing me that You are faithful, loving, and near.
Help me to trust Your name when I feel afraid.
Help me to rest in Your character when life feels uncertain.
You are my banner, my healer, and my Redeemer.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
⸻
Journaling Reminder
Sit quietly with Jesus. Ask Him which name of God He wants you to hold onto today. Write until your thoughts pause. Then reread and listen again.
Begin with:
“My little lamb…” or “Dear daughter…”
