Reflection
Today’s reading shows us both the patience of God and the maturing of faith.
In Genesis 20, Abraham once again acts out of fear and protects himself rather than trusting the Lord fully. He lies about Sarah—again. And yet, God steps in—again. What is striking is that Abimelech speaks to God, fears Him, and obeys Him, while Abraham, the man of promise, is still learning to trust. This reminds us that God’s covenant does not rest on human perfection, but on His faithfulness. Even in Abraham’s weakness, God preserves the promised line through which Jesus would come.
Then Genesis 21 shows us God’s faithfulness fulfilled. Sarah gives birth to Isaac—exactly as God promised, at the appointed time. Laughter replaces waiting. Worship follows promise. Abraham plants a tree and calls on the name of the Lord, the Eternal God. His faith is growing—not because he is flawless, but because he has seen God keep His word.
Then comes Genesis 22—the turning point.
For the first time, Scripture says God tested Abraham’s faith. This was not temptation, but refinement. Isaac was the promise, the joy, the miracle Abraham waited decades for. And now God asks for him. Abraham rises early. He walks three days—three days carrying a command that made no sense. Yet he says, “We will go and worship, and we will come again.” This is resurrection faith. Abraham trusted that God could give life even if Isaac died.
When Abraham says, “God will provide Himself a lamb,” he speaks prophetically. God provides a ram that day—but one day, God would provide His own Son. Isaac is spared. Jesus would not be.
Abraham names the place Jehovah-Jireh—the Lord who sees and provides. Obedience leads to deeper revelation. And God swears by Himself, sealing a promise that through Abraham’s seed, all nations would be blessed. This is the Gospel written in advance.
Luke 8 reminds us that fruit comes from hearts that hear God’s word and hold onto it with perseverance. Abraham didn’t have perfect faith—but he had a surrendered one. And that kind of faith bears fruit.

Lesson for Me
Faith is not formed in one moment—it is shaped through years of walking with God, watching Him keep His promises, and learning to trust Him with what matters most. God does not ask for what He has not already proven Himself faithful to give. When I surrender what I love most into His hands, I grow stronger—not weaker—in my walk with Him.
(livable applications—not abstract, but daily.

God did not want Isaac—He wanted Abraham’s heart.
Apply it today:
Ask yourself honestly:
