JEHOIADA
📖 Scripture Focus

“Then Jehoiada made a covenant between the Lord and the king and the people that they would be the Lord’s people. He also made a covenant between the king and the people.”
—2 Kings 11:17 (NLT)

“All his life Joash did what was pleasing in the Lord’s sight because Jehoiada the priest instructed him.”
—2 Kings 12:2 (NLT)

“Jehoiada lived to a very old age, finally dying at 130. He was buried among the kings in the City of David, because he had done so much good in Israel for God and his Temple.”
—2 Chronicles 24:15–16 (NLT)

“That was how King Joash repaid Jehoiada for his loyalty—by killing his son. Zechariah’s last words as he died were, ‘May the Lord see what they are doing and avenge my death!’”
—2 Chronicles 24:22 (NLT)

🕊️ Devotional
We’ve read about the evil Queen Athaliah—how she seized power through murder and ruled in wickedness. But today, our focus shifts to a lesser-discussed hero: Jehoiada the priest, whose name means “The LORD knows.”
The name Jehoiada (יְהוֹיָדָע in Hebrew, Yᵊhôyāḏāʿ) comes from two Hebrew parts:
  • “Yah” – a shortened form of YHWH, the name of God
  • “yada” – meaning to know or to acknowledge
So Jehoiada’s name reflects God's intimate knowledge—He sees, knows, and understands. This is fitting for a high priest who was faithful, wise, and instrumental in preserving the Davidic line by protecting Joash and restoring covenant loyalty to God during a time of national idolatry and corruption.

✨ Jehoiada lived up to his name: while others followed Baal,
the LORD knew Jehoiada, and Jehoiada helped the people know the LORD.
In a time of bloodshed and spiritual darkness, Jehoiada stood like a light—rescuing the last heir to David’s throne, protecting him for years, and leading the people in covenant back to God.

But when Jehoiada died, King Joash began to listen to ungodly voices. He abandoned the temple. And in a heartbreaking betrayal, he ordered the death of Zechariah—Jehoiada’s own son.
💔 A tragic turn for someone who started so well.

“All his life Joash did what was pleasing in the Lord’s sight because Jehoiada the priest instructed him.”
—2 Kings 12:2 (NLT)

Jehoiada was Joash’s accountability. His anchor. His steady voice of truth. But when that anchor was gone, Joash drifted—and drifted far.

And that brings us to the lesson God put on my heart this morning…
💛
We need to understand how intimately the LORD knows me—He knows you. He knows all about us, and still He loves us. He is with us. He will never leave us. 🙌
I’m sure it wasn’t easy for Jehoiada to hide the king for six years, but he did it. And somehow, he managed to hold it all together while everyone else’s hearts were full of evil.
✨ That’s how I want to be.
A bright light shining for Jesus that keeps the darkness out.
I can’t control people’s hearts, but while I’m here on earth, my desire is to shine so brightly that the darkness can’t help but flee.
So how can I shine?
I say it’s by being bold for the Lord—
🗣 His ways on my lips
📖 His Word in my heart
💞 His love in my actions
🌿 His peace when things feel chaotic
To stand for righteousness.
To not allow evil to prevail.
To hold on tightly to my Priest, Jesus Christ—because even when the “Jehoiadas” in our lives are gone, our Great High Priest lives forever (Hebrews 4:14).

✨ Application Questions
🔍 Is there an area of my life where the “priest”—God’s voice or spiritual anchor—has gone quiet?
🧍🏽‍♀️ Am I maintaining my walk with God even when no one is holding me accountable?
🔥 What can I do today to keep Jesus, my High Priest, alive and active in every area of my heart?
🌟 Am I shining bright enough for Jesus that the darkness around me is pushed back?
📣 Am I bold in speaking God’s truth and standing for righteousness even when others compromise?

🙏 Prayer
Jesus, my High Priest—
Don’t let me drift from You.
I want to follow You—not just when others are watching or when it feels easy, but always.
Help me crucify my flesh daily, walk in the Spirit, and remain in covenant with You.
Let me shine so brightly that the darkness cannot stay.
Let me be a woman who stands, who speaks truth, who guards what’s holy and honors what’s right.
Keep me near. Keep me humble.
Amen. 💛

 Bonus Reflection – 1 Timothy 6
📖 “Guard What God Has Entrusted to You” (v. 20)
In 1 Timothy 6, Paul is writing his final encouragements to Timothy, his true son in the faith—the one he trusted deeply. Paul once said:

“I have no one else like Timothy, who genuinely cares about your welfare.”
—Philippians 2:20 (NLT)

Timothy was more than a student—he was someone who shared Paul’s heart for God and for people. And as Paul closes this letter, his message is urgent: Hold on to the truth. Fight the good fight. Stay alert. Guard what God has given you.
Paul was deeply concerned that once he was gone, others might drift from truth and follow false teaching. And that fear came true, just like in the story we read today about Joash and Jehoiada.

👑 When Jehoiada died, Joash—and the entire nation—fell away from the Lord.
Just like Paul feared for the church, Jehoiada’s absence revealed hearts that had been dependent on the man, not truly rooted in God.

🔥 Guarding What God Has Entrusted to You
Paul didn’t just tell Timothy to watch out for false teachers—he told him to pursue righteousness, run from evil, and fight for faith.

“But you, Timothy, are a man of God; so run from all these evil things. Pursue righteousness and a godly life, along with faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness.”
—1 Timothy 6:11 (NLT)

“Fight the good fight for the true faith. Hold tightly to the eternal life to which God has called you…”
—1 Timothy 6:12 (NLT)

This isn’t just for pastors and teachers. This is for us.
Because we too are stewards of truth.
We too are called to guard the deposit of faith.
We too must shine bright, even when the spiritual voices we leaned on are no longer around.

💭 What About Me?
Lord, am I guarding what You’ve already entrusted to me?
☀️ Do I see time spent with You as vital to my life—or just something I try to “fit in”?
💧 Am I finding godly contentment? Is it truly satisfying me, fulfilling every need—or am I still chasing something else?
🛡️ Jesus, You said I am made whole and complete in You. Am I living like I believe that?
🔄 What changes do I need to make today that align fully with what You want for me?
🚪 What do I need to let go of that might be a crack—a little open door—for the enemy to get in?
🌟 What can I do today to shine a little brighter for You?

🙏 Prayer
Jesus, help me guard what You’ve given me.
Let me not drift or grow cold. Let me take seriously the calling to walk in truth and be a light in this dark world.
Teach me to pursue righteousness, love, gentleness, and godly contentment.
Show me anything that needs to change so I can walk fully in Your will.
Keep me grounded in You—my Lord, my Teacher, my High Priest forever.
Amen.
