📖 October 4
Today’s Reading: Esther 1–2; Psalm 150; Luke 17

📜 Scripture Focus

“He wanted the nobles and all the other men to gaze on her beauty, for she was a very beautiful woman. But when they conveyed the king’s order to Queen Vashti, she refused to come. This made the king furious, and he burned with anger.”
(Esther 1:11–12, NLT)

“But after Xerxes’ anger had subsided, he began thinking about Vashti and what she had done and the decree he had made.”
(Esther 2:1, NLT)

“…Esther accepted the advice of Hegai, the eunuch in charge of the harem… And the king loved Esther more than any of the other young women. He was so delighted with her that he set the royal crown on her head and declared her queen instead of Vashti.”
(Esther 2:15, 17, NLT)

🌸 Reflection

My sister friends,
I still picture the scene we just read in Ezra — the temple finally finished, God’s people gathered to celebrate the Passover with such joy. That was a high moment after years of exile.

Then about 35 years later, the story shifts. We’re no longer in Jerusalem but far away in the Persian capital of Susa. King Xerxes stages a 180-day display of his wealth, followed by a 7-day party where the wine flows freely.
On the last day, “the king was in high spirits from wine” (Esth 1:10) and in his pride demands that Queen Vashti come wearing her royal crown so everyone can stare at her beauty. She refuses to be paraded before a drunken crowd. Her refusal humiliates the king and sets in motion the search for a new queen.

Some in that day may have thought Vashti was foolish, others admired her courage. But her choice — and the king’s pride — opened the door for a young Jewish woman named Esther to be raised up by God at just the right time.

And here’s what amazes me: God’s name isn’t even mentioned in these chapters, yet His hand is all over the story.
•He allowed Vashti’s refusal to create an opening.
•He gave Esther favor with Hegai and with the king.
•He placed Mordecai at the gate where he would later overhear a plot against the king.

Long before Haman’s hatred rose up, God was already at work — quietly arranging the details that would protect His people. The Jews in Persia had no idea they would one day need deliverance, but God knew and was preparing the way decades in advance.

Sisters, that gives me courage to keep trusting Him.
And it comforts me to realize this: the Lord who knows my future has already been at work in my past — arranging divine appointments, moving pieces I couldn’t see — so that when I step into tomorrow, His help is already waiting.
Even in the complicated “now,” when I don’t know what’s ahead, I can trust that He is weaving it all together for His purpose and my good.

When life feels uncertain or when God seems silent, Esther reminds us: His silence is not His absence.
The same God who was working behind the scenes in Persia is weaving the details of our stories even now.

🌸 Lesson for Us

My Sister Friend, sometimes the hardest part of trusting the Lord is when I can’t see what He’s doing.
Esther’s story tells me that God’s work often starts long before I ever know I’ll need it.

The Lord who knows my future was already at work in my past, arranging divine appointments and putting pieces in place for my good and for His glory.
I can rest knowing that His wisdom and love reach into yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

💭 Application
1.Where in my life today do I feel like God is silent or absent?
2.How does this story encourage me to trust Him with the unseen details?
3.Looking back, can I recall a time when God had already set things in place before I knew I’d need His help?
4.What step of obedience or faith do I need to take right now, trusting that He is already at work?

🙏 Prayer

Lord, thank You that You never leave Your people without Your care.
You were already at work for Esther and her people long before the danger came.
Help me trust that You are arranging the details of my life even now.
Give me peace in the present and confidence for the future.
Teach me to rest in Your providence and to walk faithfully with You today.
In Jesus’ name, amen.

📝 Journaling Prompt

Find a quiet moment and ask the Lord to remind you of a time in your past when He was already at work preparing the way for you.
Write it down as a testimony — and let it strengthen your trust for whatever lies ahead.

✝️ Gospel Connection

Sisters, as I read Esther’s story, I can’t help but think of something even greater.
Before the Jews ever faced Haman’s threat, God was already arranging their rescue.
And even further back — before we were ever born, before the world itself was formed — God had already planned our deliverance through His Son.

“He chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world…” (Ephesians 1:4)
“…the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world.” (Revelation 13:8)

Just as Esther was positioned “for such a time as this,” Jesus came at the perfect time to deliver us from sin and death (Galatians 4:4-5).
What a reminder that nothing catches God by surprise.
Long before we knew we were sinners in need of a Savior, God’s plan for redemption was already in motion.
This same faithful God is still weaving His story in our lives today.
